I have found that when you deal with people from all over the world on a day to day basis, it is smart to stay up on the world current events. I never used to read the national and world news sections, until I started working for this firm that has divisions all over the world. For some reason, everyone around the world is always interested in what is going on in the states and they always want to discuss it with me.

I have found that if you know about everything going on very close to them, it builds a better and stronger business and personal relationship. I might not always understand the world current events, but I can at least try and have a short conversation with my overseas colleagues.

Many of the people that work in my office do the same thing and they also have seen their relationships with their clients grow to be more solid. People like to know that you care and then they trust you more. Not to mention, that everyone should know what is happening around the world, since so much of it affects things that go on here in the states.
