The pSeries and iSeries - a comparison of facilities

Both new and used pseries and the iSeries run on partitioned environment. In iSeries Linux coexists with OS/400 and requires primary partition there. In pSeries Linux coexists with AIX but no primary partition in AIX is required and stand alone partition on Linux is possible.

While iSeries uses the OS/400 console that may be local or remote or even DST, the pSeries uses the HMC or Hardware Management System. Like iSeries, they could be local or remote. The iSeries requires navigation through the OS/400 command line and the Linux operations via the port 2301 of the OS/400. In pSeries the HMC works through the virtual consoles and it also has the serial console options required for stand alone operations.

Unlike the sub-processor assignment in case of the iSeries, the pSeries requires whole processor assignment. The former is dynamic for both O/S 400 and Linux while the pSeries are dynamic for AIX but Linux require rebooting. The iSeries uses virtual devices that is shared with as well as owned by OS/400. Its input output devices are owned by Linux. They could be mixed as well as matched.

In contrast the input output devices that are used by the pSeries are owned by Linux partitions. They are attached with communication adapter. Its Linux Console is logged via the HMC virtual terminal. It also supports serial connection for stand alone systems.
